Welcome to the Last Frontier, Alaska, a land of breath-taking natural beauty and untamed wilderness. My family and I recently travelled from London across to Alaska for the summer trip of a lifetime. We started our trip in the mesmerising state by travelling to Anchorage and further Seward, before embarking on an Alaskan cruise. Both Anchorage and Seward should join your must-visit list, these two unique destinations offered us an incredible range of experiences leaving us in awe of the grandeur of nature. Let's dive into what makes Anchorage and Seward so special.
Anchorage: Where Urban Meets Wilderness
Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, may surprise you with its perfect blend of urban amenities and proximity to untouched wilderness. Nestled between the Chugach Mountains and the sparkling waters of Cook Inlet, this city is a gateway to a plethora of outdoor adventures. We only stayed in Anchorage for two nights but were able to experience so much, from watching locals fish for the largest salmon possible in an incredible week long competition where men, women and children take part, to learning about the local heritage at the Alaska Native Heritage Centre which encourages you to immerse yourself in Alaska's rich cultural heritage, where you can learn about the customs, traditions, and artistry of Alaska Native peoples through captivating exhibits and demonstrations. At night we explored into the heart of the city and got to experience the incredible music scene that elevates though the entire city.
Cross-state travel: from Anchorage to Seward
To travel across the state from Anchorage to Seward we caught the Coastal Classic Train sitting in the Adventure Class. The train travels along with the beautiful coast of Alaska on one side and the Chugach mountain range on the other side. You feel like you are one with nature with all sorts of animals and birds visible from the incredible glass ceiling. You will experience the incredible backcountry wilderness filled with incredible sights.
Seward: Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park
Located 125 miles south of Anchorage, Seward is a charming coastal town renowned for its picturesque landscapes and its proximity to Kenai Fjords National Park. This park is a feast for the eyes, boasting glaciers, fjords, and diverse marine life. My family and I stayed in the old town, an area I would recommend to anyone vacationing in Seward, its located a short walk from the picturesque stone beaches and all sorts of shops, restaurants and even the sea life rehabilitation centre, where they aid sick or hurt sea animals in returning to their natural habitat.
Whilst we only stayed in Seward for 3 nights we were able to experience so much beauty and culture, however there were many things we weren’t able to fit in but are definitely a must do if you embark on this journey yourself!
- Kenai Fjords National Park: Embark on a boat tour from Seward's harbour to explore the majestic Kenai Fjords. Witness towering glaciers calving into the sea, watch playful sea otters, and marvel at the immense humpback whales. The park is a testament to the ever-changing nature of the landscape.
- Exit Glacier: A short drive from Seward will lead you to Exit Glacier, one of Alaska's most accessible glaciers. Take a hike to get up close and personal with the icy wonder, and while you're there, learn about the effects of climate change on these magnificent formations.
- Resurrection Bay: This stunning bay offers opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and sailing. The serene waters and surrounding mountains make it a perfect spot for relaxation and appreciating the beauty of nature.
- Seward SeaLife Center: Get an underwater view of Alaska's marine life without getting wet! The SeaLife Center is an educational and research facility where you can observe sea birds, seals, sea lions, and various fish species.
